Power Supply Challenges During an Outage
Even with an emergency generator, not every device is guaranteed to keep running during an outage. We have organized the challenges that can arise at medical and care sites.
General Outlets Unusable During an Outage
During an outage, electricity reaches only the outlets connected to the emergency power supply. The general (white) outlets in patient rooms and offices may remain unusable even while the generator is running.
The Power Gap Before the Generator Starts
JIS T 1022 (the safety standard for hospital electrical installations) requires general emergency power sources to supply electricity within 40 seconds of a commercial power failure. Until the emergency generator starts up, ordinary outlets lose power.
Power Needs an Emergency Generator Cannot Cover
Even during an outage, hospitals have functions that must continue — clinical care, information and communications, nurse call systems, and more. Adding distributed backup power that secures electricity exactly where it is needed, alongside the emergency generator, leads to more effective BCP measures.

Power Measures by Facility Type
At hospitals, clinics, and care facilities, both the equipment that must be protected and the power measures required differ.
Emergency Power That Does Not Reach the Whole Hospital
At many hospitals, the emergency generator prioritizes critical facilities such as the ICU, operating rooms, and EPS. Power measures may not reach patient rooms, outpatient areas, reception, electronic medical records, PACS, or Wi-Fi. With "generator + KOB," we complement the clinical functions that cannot be fully covered.

The FY2026 (Reiwa 8) medical fee revision added the formulation and periodic review of a business continuity plan (BCP) to the facility standards for the Enhanced Functions Additional Fee (a transitional period until May 31, 2027 applies to medical institutions registered as of March 31, 2026). Many clinics have no emergency power source, and an outage directly halts electronic medical records, billing systems, reception, and medical devices.

With emergency generators alone,
there are places power is hard to reach.
Even with an emergency generator in place, power may not reach everywhere it's needed, including patient rooms, nurse stations, monitoring systems, Wi-Fi, electronic medical records, and servers.
